[World Bank report] Transforming the Lives of Women and Girls in Eastern and Southern Africa

Gender equality is central to the World Bank’s mission of ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. In Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE), where women and girls face unique disadvantages in education and economic empowerment, and where gender-based violence remains prevalent, operations that prioritise gender considerations have achieved some impressive successes over the past decade. The region upholds increased ambition and commitment to close gender gaps and boost women's empowerment, guided by the World Bank's new Gender Strategy, which highlights three key strategic objectives: (i) eliminate all forms of gender-based violence (GBV) and elevate human capital, (ii) enhance and expand economic opportunities, and (iii) engage women as leaders.
