Employment statistics :2023 q1

This document contains South Africa's Quarterly Labour force survey which collects information on the labour market activity of individuals aged 15 years and older and provides the official measures of employment and unemployment. The statistics below measure the period between January and March 2023.


The number of unemployed increased by 179 000 in Q1:2023 compared to Q4:2022. While the number of those who are employed increased by 258 000 in the same quarter:


  • Gender disparity still persists with regard to the unemployment rate, with 35,4.% of the females unemployed while there is a 30, 7% unemployment rate among males. This is a gap of 4.7%.


  • Black women continue to be the most excluded demographic in economic activity, with an unemployment rate of 39,9%, this is 4,5 percentage points higher than the national average.


  • The largest industry employment gains were recorded in Finance (184 000), Community and social services(175 000) and Agriculture(27 000).
